This was the week at Wisewarrior Training…

Combat Class, Mondays 6.45pm

Another lively session by Dave San and James San this Monday night! It was good to see the ranks of the class swelled by some black and brown belts, they were obviously taking the opportunity to get a free fitness session in! The class had the usual format of combat patterns working on the upper body and some leg work, with a nice bit of resistance work halfway through.

BAMA Advanced Class, Mondays 7.45pm

The highest-grade class of the week had true fire and grit, worthy of that elite title this week!
Powerful and focused combat work done at high level and yet safely is a joy to watch! Spontaneous attack and defence was the theme, with Richard San pushing the whole class on to making sure their defensive responses were appropriate to the attacks. Working on good combat stances with high-speed attacks the class was soon buzzing, and they quickly moved from free-form partner work on to two-on-to-one scenario’s.

Ken-Kai-Ryu, Mondays, 7.45pm

This sword class ran by Richard San was still focused heavily on floor work, so important for the higher grades in sword. To be able to show the serenity and control needed for cuts from the floor and yet still maintain the power of the cuts from standing is always a great test! Dohigh Tam showed real improvement in her control this week, well done!

Reflective Aikido, Tuesdays, 8.30pm

More work this week on the concept of taking an opponents posture, and ultimately their strength, away from them using the lever that is their attack.
Tim san this week explained how our motion and posture has more to offer in the successful application of a lock than strength alone.

Japanese Sword, Tuesdays, 9.30pm

Tuesday night’s class focused on resheathing the sword this week, working on the detail and precision of the deft and skillful movements required to draw, cut and resheath the sword. And particular attention was made toward mind set and feel as it is these concepts that run like a thread through all our sessions.

BAMA Karate and Aikido Te Class, Wednesdays, 6.45pm

A busy session this week with all in attendance studying hard for imminent preliminary gradings. In particular the brown belts worked this week at the Partner Work section of their part one tests. It’s a lot of knowledge these guys have amassed over their time here and having it at their finger tips is the thrust of this test. A dry run in front of the class showed the depth of their knowledge, and a couple of holes too!! But they are well on course for an excellent performance in a couple of weeks time. Great work by all this week, especially Dohigh Nick who has worked exceptionally hard, with his own personal practice as well as in the Dojo, and is looking a strong candidate for his preliminary test very soon. Keep up the great work guys!!

Philosophy Group

In the absence of an actual Philosophy Class this week we have decided to instead set a topic for discussion…

The Martial Arts has more to offer an individual than just the skills to defend themselves physically. What are these ‘deeper’ qualities, in particular, what is it about YOUR Martial Arts training that appeals to you the most and how does it benefit you???

See you all in the Dojo…
