I’m afraid this News feed blog just got a bit longer this week, but for a good reason! As we started a new class this week, such is the hectic social whirl that is Wisewarrior! So check out the Holistic Martial Art class post and the Spotlight Blog to find out all about our new class!
Also check out the ‘Whats On’ blog for our upcoming ‘Art of Harmonising spirit’ taster session, which is on the 21st of July and is free on booking and open to all.
See you in the dojo!
Combat club braved the summer heat this week, thank god for air conditioning!! We are well into our partner training routines now and our dynamic duo of James San and Dave San revealed two more routines to add to the repertoire. Another great workout, and it has to be said, judging by the warm-up, the students are definitely getting fitter!!!
BAMA Advanced Class, Mondays 7.45pm
Well it started out as a kick lesson, or so they thought, however Tim San had an entirely different agenda in mind this week! Kicks and the use of sweeping blocks was just an elaborate ploy to teach a far more fundamental principle – combative attitude. The high grades as ever stepped things up a notch as they got to grips with idea while both attacking and defending…. The immovable object going head to head with the unstoppable force!!
’100 cut’ drills were the order of the day for the class, this classic Ken-Kai-Ryu pattern, though often dreaded by students because of the rigid nature and technical discipline required, is the bedrock of cut control and stance perfection. When the mind perfects the reason, then the sequence comes alive!
Holistic Martial Art Class, Tuesdays, 6.30pm
This Tuesday saw the official launch of Wisewarrior’s ‘Holistic martial art class’, at the Leisure@Cheltenham centre. This is a really wonderful opportunity for Richard San and Tim San to be able to teach the core movement and philosophical principles that have given them both so many benefits over their past 30 years in martial arts, but with out the need to teach combat or self defence techniques. This powerful but gentle session is open to everyone who wishes to enter the sports centre, so if you know of anyone who might be interested then please spread the word!
See Richard San’s full write up in the ‘Spotlight Blog’ soon.
Reflective Aikido, Tuesdays, 8.30pm
Continuing on from last weeks theme the class this week worked on getting greater movement and more rapid motion into their techniques. This proved to be incredibly important especially when attempting to apply ‘locks & throws’ without the use of abrupt force. All this extra motion made for quite a tiring evening, but the class did very well indeed and got the hang of the lesson with some spectacular results!
Japanese Sword, Tuesdays, 9.30pm
To move effortlessly in to a killing stance or move away from a killing cut was how Richard San explained the exercise to the class this Tuesday. So often in a sword class where students are only using wooden bokkens and are not in a combat mind set, they quickly loose sight of the reason and purpose of a stance, to rediscover its original purpose is to find the truth of the action! Our sword students looked very good as the began to perceive the purpose of the stance.
BAMA Karate and Aikido Te Class, Wednesdays, 6.45pm
This Wednesday’s session was very different from our usual format. Last week we were all privileged to watch the brown belts in action as they prepared for their imminent black belt part one gradings. They were all demonstrating their partner based combat sequences to show knowledge and proficiency in a number of techniques. Whilst their techniques were great, what let them down was the amount of hesitation prior to performing the requested techniques. At Wisewarrior one element that we choose to concentrate a lot on in our BAMA subjects of Bushido Karate and Aikido-Te on a Wednesday evening, is the self defence/reality combat side of being a martial artist. If we ever needed to defend ourselves using martial arts, then any hesitation may lead to some serious trouble!
So this week we had a very different set up, and a very different split of students. There were only three groups; Senseis Tim and Richard taking all brown and blackbelts, one group Aikido Te, and the other for Karate, the third group were with Sensei Tor, who took the rest of the class on a great tour of aikido techniques!
By the end of the two hours everybody certainly look considerably better than at the beginning of the lesson, and more importantly the brown belts took another step closer to those part one gradings!
We are still looking forward to more replies to Tim San’s question from last week, so dont be shy, please email your thoughts along to; enquires@wisewarrior.co.uk
