Combat Class, Mondays 6.45pm

This Monday James San ran a great session, he had a mix of our experienced BAMA students plus some regular Combat attendees.
He ran through 2 of the patterns from last week plus introduced a new one.
I think even the Brown belts were surprised by how much of a work out it was, some great kick practice for the Karate guys, but maybe a little bit of a shock to the Aikido guys!!
So if you fancy an extra workout session to get your fitness levels up then get yourself down to this session.
Remember Combat class is now starting at the new time of 6.45pm on Mondays.

Ken-Kai-Ryu, Mondays, 7.45pm
This Monday Richard San was teaching the ‘Mirror of Truth Cuts’ pt 1, which is required for the students doing their BAMA Blue belts in sword.
An amazing sequence from the floor that is technically demanding yet has a wonderful simplicity that doesn’t allow the student to hide in any ‘flashy’ movements.
Dohigh Tam really improved during that class, the focus was on the immediacy of the draw, trying to reduce mental pauses that can happen when you grasp the Tsuka, and in this she really excelled, well done!
This Monday Richard San hopes to cover Battle Kata!

Reflective Aikido, Tuesdays, 8.30pm
Tuesday’s Reflective Aikido class was a master class in the art of the ‘flowing wrist lock’ by Tim San. With the mind set of movement and stability he had the class find new locks for themselves from all unexpected angles, this class is becoming a must for our more combat orientated Aikido-Te class to get to, for them to understand the fluidness of their ‘art form’.

Japanese Sword, Tuesdays, 9.30pm
No long Zen-Kutsu Dachi’s! Was Sensei Richard’s refrain this week in our pure sword class on Tuesday night, everything had to be kept moving, each cut was created by the one before, the body finding its balance behind the flow of the cut, the long stance of Zen- Kutsu often allows the sword student to become too static, hence spoiling his spontaneous flow, that was the idea, and our Tuesday night sword students seem to take the lesson to heart, so well done there!

BAMA Karate and Aikido Te Class, Wednesdays, 6.45pm
Wednesdays class saw the first part grading process begun with three of our Wednesday night BAMA students take and pass their internal part one gradings.
What was really nice was seeing those new Kohighs take their respective yellow and orange grades, both of these new students did incredibly well. They had a very tough lesson with Sensei Tor who looked at all possible techniques that could be asked for.
They were then graded by sensei Richard, who used a group of brown and blue belts as partners to really test applications of kata, these high grades made great attackers! Both Kohigh Matthew and Jose did incredibly well and we were all impressed with the spirit they showed and their technical knowledge.
Dohigh Wayne took his long over due second weapon grade in Jo staff. Once again a very tough grading. It started with a very testing lesson under the watchful eyes of Dennis San, who drilled attacks against a pad and attacker plus spontaneous patterns and waza. A wonderful grading, which was approved by Tim San, despite loosing his weapon when Sensei Tim snapped it while demonstrating a power strike to him, lesson learned!!

Remember to all Black and Brown belts, we are bringing back the dedicated ‘high grade training night’ this Monday at 7.45!
This means a change of time for the Combat Club class, that is now running from 6.45 to 7.45. The sword classes remain unaffected. We hope you’re all enjoying the new format Combat Club. It seems to be going very well.

Of course any black/brown belts are more than welcome to come along to the combat class and use it for a warm up, ready for the excitement to follow!
So once again big congratulations to Kohighs Matthew and Jose, and also to Dohigh Wayne. We’re looking forward to seeing some more part one gradings next Wednesday night!

Philosophy Group
As always a diverse group of lessons, discussions and view points this week!
The one that stood out for Richard San was the; ‘knowing of the names lesson’ that popped up. The groups were talking about the role of personal wisdom and the understanding of the deeper truths of our world on a personal level, this formed the discussion that If we can understand something, then maybe we can ‘name’ it and thus use it, we just need to know the names of the wisdom that underlies our perceptions, you can see the fun they had with this!

And just a last quick reminder that our workshop for May is on Saturday 26th and will be on “The Art of Kata”
More on this in next weeks update.
