Couple of those really special sessions this week… no gradings to prepare for, no syllabus to stick to and pretty much free rein for us instructors to explore whatever facet of martial arts we liked on Monday and Wednesday – bliss!
So on these two sessions we decided the class could do with unleashing some frustrations and spent both evenings working with the focus pads. (apart from the Sword session on Monday night of course!)
Wednesday saw the culmination of the pad sessions; with simple punch drills to begin with and as the night wore on so they got more complex. The final drill in particular was the epitome of what a great drill should incorporate with both partners interacting to make a very skillful and invigorating routine.
This is the key to great drills. If a drill has the one opponent switching off because “its the other guys turn” then the training is going to get pretty stale pretty quick. But when both sides have to work to bring it together and even the pad holder is getting in on the act, throwing attacks as well as holding up targets, now thats a drill!!
And we rounded the evening off with our Cheltenham Dojo Christmas meal! A great evening trying to eat all the food we ordered, and feeling very full afterwards!
It was a real chance for everyone to spend some quality time with each other. A great bunch of people who have worked hard all year with their own personal martial art goals, but have also supported each other with grades and new belts and have also supported each other in new business ventures, charity work and through illness, in fact…through all of life’s challenges this year. So well done to you all for a great 2013!
Christmas dates….
Christmas isn’t here quite yet, so normal Monday and Wednesday night sessions at Dean Close will continue until the 18th of December and then resume as normal on the 6th of January. But Richard San will be teaching privately on every Saturday throughout the Christmas period, so if you would like a lesson with him then just text or call him on 07931 575339
See you in the dojo!
