Sword sword and more sword was Monday’s theme, the weather has made this weeks evening sessions hot work, but the students made excellent use of the time and Richard San’s input to work on their up coming demonstration for the July 31st performance night.
This grading/performance night has gotten many students either working hard or panicking (depending on your point of view!!) Honing their performances and rising to the challenge of standing in front of the class to show off their talents.
Wednesdays even warmer session (thank heavens for an air conditioned dojo!) followed a similar theme with excellent work from all in attendance, especially the Aikido group who had the most physical session to get through; driven unmercifully at one point by Sempai Lucy! 🙂
There is something quite magical about performing a kata for your peers. Although there is always the risk that someone will forget their moves, it is this very pressure that heightens everyones performance. It is truely amazing to watch just what people can pull out of the bag when the heat is on and their back is to the wall.
Gradings are our main system for helping people develop. In general, if you want a muscle to get stronger then, quite simply, you have to ask more of it than it would normally give. It is in this process of going beyond the norm that the growth takes place.
The gradings are our areana for asking a student to dig that little bit deeper, to do more than they would normally do. And time and again the results are staggering. You can tell when the test has done its magic as the student leaves the mat walking an inch taller, so embrace the heat!!!
