Ken-Kai-Ryu, Mondays, 7.45pm

This Monday Sword Class was preparation for sword gradings, even the black belts were roped into this exercise! Everyone worked well with Richard Sans pointers on posture, flow and technique throughout their individual syllabus. We are looking forward to some good demonstrations next week.

Holistic martial Arts Class, Tuesdays 6.30pm

Tuesday saw the last session of the 8 week HMA course at the Leisure centre with Richard San revealing the full movements of the ‘Art Form’ to the class, who had worked very hard over the weeks to understand it. An amazing effort for non martial artists! It was great having Tor San there for the last session to see every ones improvement. We are now considering offering this HMA course to full time students, stay tuned! ________________________________________________________________

Reflective Aikido, Tuesdays, 8.30pm

Destabilising the opponent was the subject of Tuesdays class, which inevitably meant yet another whacky, off-the-wall analogy from Tim San! But despite his best attempts to confuse everyone (even Richard San!) the class had a snazzy little routine and each took it in turn to throw everyone. A great, all be it complicated lesson and everyone had a good deal of practice, especially break-falling!!!

Japanese Sword, Tuesdays, 9.30pm

Japanese sword saw great progress in the ‘Art of Sword Kata’  – this is the amazing new sword kata that beginners will learn that encompasses everything for a good grounding in basic sword work and performance. Demonstrations to follow!

Don’t forget that sword work is an excellent compliment to all the Martial Arts classes we run as it develops posture and focus simultaneously. Ask your sensei if you would like to try this or even the Monday Sword class.

BAMA Karate and Aikido Te Class, Wednesdays, 6.45pm

More Mayhem this week, after the individual private training was concluded. This week the chaos revolved around Knife Defence as Tim San and Richard San worked the class into a frenzy of attacks and defences. (Tim San was on his best behaviour this week, making a real effort to keep it simple and the anaologies to a minimum!) The atmosphere in the room really was the main event here as everyone worked hard to make the routines as realistic as possible. Great work and strong spirit in the class as always.

Philosophy Group

Following a great lesson on Kata work Mark San decided to put pen to paper explaining his personal thoughts that he hopes to reflect through his performances…

The Seven KatasKata 1

A celebration!

An explosion of passion and power!

No violence, no aggression,

Only Positivity unleashed,

We go forwards,

Even when going backwards.

Kata 2

We have the passion,

Now we cultivate precision and skill,

To hunt and destroy,

Or to take pleasure in movement –

Always ready, with short steps or long,

To find the foe in any direction.

Kata 3

We move fast or with focus,

The eyes take us to a world

Beyond technique –

Pushing past the boundaries

Of the world we thought we knew.

Kata 4

Pistons move so fast,

The engine is at the point of blowing,

Yet the driver is in control,

Whichever gear selected,

Acceleration never ceases.

Kata 5

Fists become the point of a blade,

Arms and legs transform into the deadly symmetry

Of the katana –

Lethality and artistry –

A perfect paradox, a whirlwind

That touches the soul.

Kata 6

Behind all games for thrones,

Lays blood, sweat and tears.

Foes met litter the battlefield,

The earth trembles with the step

Of the last man standing.

Kata 7

The circle is complete,

The road to adventure and learning

At last takes us home.

All thoughts are forgotten,

We fly with the eagles now –

Who knows where the wind will take us?
