The kobudo seminaris now just over a week away and there seems to be a lot of interest judging by the comments appearing in the blog, Facebook etc. as well as the obvious content, (which will be amazing when two 4th Dans are running it!) it will be really nice getting everybody together for a very different event and at another venue. As instructors we find that people understandably tend to only train on certain days, which means that often certain students don’t get to see each other for weeks at a time. So we are looking forward to having this event where those students can meet up again, so there is the immediate social benefit and catch up, but more importantly it is a great opportunity to train with somebody different, for every partner allows you to learn something new in the dojo.
Everybody is very different and we all bring our uniqueness into the dojo, whether it be our weight, our height, our years of experience or the way we move etc. To train with different students should be treated as an opportunity to not just improve the techniques you are training in, but to further your understanding of everything you know to date, remember; the more people you train with the better you will become!
This week was a lovely example of the variety of our training nights, Monday was started with Richard San running a sword session building on the structure of the sword syllabus, and at the end of the session Mark San was graded to Orange belt in sword! So congratulations to him, and wonderful to see a high grade in Karate start a new passion for a completely different subject and work through the grades again, with sen’s focus and skill, it shouldn’t take too long!
Tuesday was a surprisingly physical night with the aikido students really embracing multiple partner work, ask anyone who was there how a bokken can help you with instantaneous arm locks and pins!! Richard San finished up with a creative sword lesson, everyone who stepped upon the area and performed their spontaneous sword looked awesome!
On Wednesday all the students who braved the race traffic had their usual detailed syllabus evening, plus those lucky enough to stay on later were able to hear Tim San’s thoughts on the “feel” of Aikido. The ability to make Aikido work without out necessarily knowing why it works, or being able to explain how it works, not because of the number of times we repeat the process of a wrist lock or arm lock, but because of all the years we try to make the locks work on so many different people!
So for your personal development here are a couple of things to consider; when you are in the dojo next and get the opportunity to train with somebody new, or who you haven’t trained with for a while, take the opportunity no matter what their grade, or their size! If you can’t make your regular training days then try to make it to one of the other training days, enjoy the difference! And finally try and make the work shops and seminars, they are FREE and you’ll hopefully get to train with loads more people than you normally do………………….. And you’ll get to meet up with really some nice people of course!
Stop Press!
Any one who showed interest in our ‘Holistic Martial art classes’ you will be pleased to hear that we have had confirmation for our workshopdemo for the weekend of the 14th15th of April at a great venue! you are all welcome of course, plus we are looking for some display team volunteers! So stay tuned for more information when it comes in.

Training with different partners makes such a difference.
I went to the Tuesday night session and learned so much from simply working with someone I wasn’t used to.
